Express Entry Stream Canada

Express Entry is one of the direct permanent residence pathways to Canada for skilled workers who have the required education and experience that Canadian economy needs. This online system used by IRCC manages a pool of prospect candidates interested to immigrate to Canada permanently. Introduced to streamline the immigration process and to address labor market needs, the program has proved to be quite a success.

Canada uses the National Occupational Classification (NOC) Codes system to describe occupations, using which IRCC can measure the applicants qualifying work experience. Teer 0, 1, 2 and 3 only qualifies for Express Entry programs.

Those who apply under Express Entry program are assessed according to several eligibility criteria, i.e. education, language, experience, age, a Canadian job offer and other qualifications that can contribute to the Canadian market. Based on these factors the applicant is assigned points, called CRS – Comprehensive Ranking System and ranked amongst the pool of candidates.

You can qualify through one of the below programs:

  1. Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSW)

To be eligible under the FSW program, you need 1 year of work experience, in Canada or abroad which must be continuous, paid and in same type of NOC code obtained in the last 10 years. You are also required to have a minimum language proficiency of CLB 7 to qualify.

  1. Federal Skilled Trades Program (FST)

2 years of experience in a skilled trade obtained within the last 5 years qualifies you for the FST program. The applicant must be qualified to practice in the trade as per the country requirements. A certificate of qualification is also available in Canada issued by provincial bodies upon clearing a skills examination.

  1. Canadian Experience Class (CEC)

CEC allows temporary foreign workers with Canadian experience to transition to permanent resident status. To be eligible, within the last 3 years, the applicant must have worked for at least 1-year full-time in a high-skilled occupation.

Any experience gained while working as a student in Canada does not count towards the program’s work experience eligibility.

The express entry system might seem complicated with numerous eligibility requirements for each individual program. The NOC code for your occupation must be chosen diligently as per the description of the duties performed while gaining work experience.

Canada is now targeting certain occupations at a low CRS as well given their high demand in Canadian economy. As for 2023 and 2024, the following broader categories are receiving invitations to apply for permanent residence if you have at least 6 months of experience in the last 3 years. The general eligibility of the above programs must be met for a successful application.

  1. French-language proficiency
  2. Healthcare occupations
  3. Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) occupations
  4. Trade occupations
  5. Transport occupations.
  6. Agriculture and agri-food occupations

IRCC typically conducts Express Entry draws approximately every two weeks. During these draws, candidates with the highest CRS scores in the pool are invited to apply for permanent residence. The frequency and number of invitations can vary based on immigration targets and priorities.

Can I improve my CRS score after entering the Express Entry pool?

Yes, you can improve your CRS score even after entering the Express Entry pool. Some ways to increase your score include obtaining a higher language proficiency score, gaining additional work experience, obtaining a job offer from a Canadian employer, receiving a provincial nomination, or improving your educational credentials.

Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs) allow Canadian provinces and territories to nominate individuals who wish to immigrate to Canada and settle in a specific province. Some PNPs are aligned with Express Entry, meaning that if you receive a provincial nomination through an Express Entry-aligned PNP, you will receive an additional 600 CRS points, virtually guaranteeing an invitation to apply for permanent residence in the next draw.

No, you do not need a job offer to apply through Express Entry. While a job offer can significantly boost your CRS score, many candidates are invited to apply for permanent residence without having a job offer. Meeting the eligibility criteria and having a competitive CRS score are key factors.

The minimum CRS score required to receive an invitation to apply (ITA) varies with each draw. The CRS cut-off score depends on the number of candidates in the pool and the specific immigration targets set by IRCC. It is advisable to monitor the latest CRS scores from recent draws to get an idea of current trends.

Yes, you can include your spouse or common-law partner and dependent children in your Express Entry application. Their information and supporting documents will be required, and their eligibility will be assessed as part of your overall application.

After receiving an ITA, you have 60 days to submit a complete application for permanent residence. This includes providing all required documents, such as police certificates, medical exams, proof of funds, and other supporting documents. Once submitted, IRCC will review your application, and if approved, you will be issued a Confirmation of Permanent Residence (COPR) and can proceed with landing in Canada as a permanent resident.

An Express Entry profile is valid for one year from the date of submission. If your profile expires before you receive an ITA, you can create a new profile and re-enter the pool, provided you still meet the eligibility requirements. It is important to keep your profile up to date with any changes to your personal or professional information. The profile will freeze as of the day of ITA and the final application must be submitted within 60 days.
